M51, the Whirlpool galaxy, epitomizes the spiral
class galaxies with a twist! Pardon the bad pun, I couldn't help it. The
Whirlpool is famed for its detailed structure and apparent connection with
a smaller 'companion' galaxy. This smaller galaxy appears to be exerting
a gravitational force upon the outer arms of the Whirlpool, distorting
its shape.
